What was their life like back then? This was probably sold just after WWII. Maybe it was in a Catholic veteran's home, just back from the war. I am probably not to far off :)

I think this might be more of a Boomer" thing, than anyother generation. Myself a boomer, remember this kind of stuff in Grandma and Grandpa's home. You might not and that's ok.

This was cool and unique back then and I think it is now. It might make a nice gift for a Catholic friend or Confirmation gift. I would even love it as a Communion Gift.

In 20 years it will be 100 years old!

Teach children to appreciate the past for the future.

Kim, the Recycled Catholic

For Sale at: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1276927402/catholic-unique-vintage-1940s-lighted?

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Graphik Webfont", -apple-system, "Helvetica Neue", "Droid Sans", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 26px;">Catholic Unique Vintage 1940's Lighted Music Box with Mary

I thought you might get a smile from this. It’s a music box, night light devotional. Probably from the mid-1940s. It has an Art Deco look before we put fins on cars.

Mary is behind the lighted doors waiting for your prayers.
The pickle jar as far back as I can remember sat on the floor beside the dresser in my parents' bedroom.

When he got ready for bed, Dad would empty his pockets and toss his coins into the jar. As a small boy, I was always fascinated at the sounds the coins made as they were dropped into the jar. They landed with a merry jingle when the jar was almost empty. Then the tones gradually muted to a dull thud as the jar was filled.

I used to squat on the floor in front of the jar to admire the copper and silver circles that glinted like a pirate's treasure when the sun poured through the bedroom window.

When the jar was filled, Dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll the coins before taking them to the bank. Taking the coins to the bank was always a big production. Stacked neatly in a small cardboard box, the coins were placed between Dad and me on the seat of his old truck.

Each and every time, as we drove to the bank, Dad would look at me hopefully. 'Those coins are going to keep you out of the textile mill, son. You’re going to do better than me. This old mill town’s not going to hold you back.' Also, each and every time, as he slid the box of rolled coins across the counter at the bank toward the cashier, he would grin proudly. these are for my son's college fund. He'll never work at the mill all his life like me.'

We would always celebrate each deposit by stopping for an ice cream cone. I always got chocolate. Dad always got vanilla. When the clerk at the ice cream parlor handed Dad his change, he would show me the few coins nestled in his palm. When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again.’ He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. As they rattled around with a brief, happy jingle, we grinned at each other. 'You'll get to college on pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters,' he said. 'But you'll get there; I'll see to that.

No matter how rough things got at home, Dad continued to doggedly drop his coins into the jar. Even the summer when Dad got laid off from the mill, and Mama had to serve dried beans several times a week, not a single dime was taken from the jar.

To the contrary, as Dad looked across the table at me, pouring catsup over my beans to make them more palatable, he became more determined than ever to make a way out for me, when you finish college, Son, he told me, his eyes glistening, You'll never have to eat beans again - unless you want to.'

The years passed, and I finished college and took a job in another town. Once, while visiting my parents, I used the phone in their bedroom, and noticed that the pickle jar was gone. It had served its purpose and had been removed.

A lump rose in my throat as I stared at the spot beside the dresser where the jar had always stood. My dad was a man of few words: he never lectured me on the values of determination, perseverance, and faith. The pickle jar had taught me all these virtues far more eloquently than the most flowery of words could have done.

When I married, I told my wife Susan about the significant part the lowly pickle jar had played in my life as a boy. In my mind, it defined, more than anything else, how much my dad had loved me.

The first Christmas after our daughter Jessica was born, we spent the holiday with my parents. After dinner, Mom and Dad sat next to each other on the sofa, taking turns cuddling their first grandchild. Jessica began to whimper softly, and Susan took her from Dad’s arms. ‘She probably needs to be changed,’ she said, carrying the baby into my parents' bedroom to diaper her. When Susan came back into the living room, there was a strange mist in her eyes.

She handed Jessica back to Dad before taking my hand and leading me into the room. 'Look,' she said softly, her eyes directing me to a spot on the floor beside the dresser. To my amazement, there, as if it had never been removed, stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already covered with coins..

I walked over to the pickle jar, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out a fistful of coins. With a gamut of emotions choking me, I dropped the coins into the jar. I looked up and saw that Dad, carrying Jessica, had slipped quietly into the room. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotions I felt. Neither one of us could speak.

This truly touched my heart. Sometimes we are so busy adding up our troubles that we forget to count our blessings. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life, for better or for worse.

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for GOOD in others.

The best and most beautiful things cannot be seen or touched - they must be felt with the heart ~ Helen Keller

- Happy moments, praise God.
Halloween Party! Christmas Party! Birthday Party! My husband bless his heart loves making Nerf Party Targets.
It all started with his love of the carnival and the shoot them up games on the Mid-ways.

All the targets are wood and have "wooden teeth" that slide off and on from the back. They easily fly off when hit with a Nerf gun foam bullet, a rubber band gun or bean bags.
Actually, It's pretty funny to see one in person. They are cleverly made and just great for children to manipulate.
I hand paint them all (his wife). All are original and different in little ways.

Stop by his store on Etsy this fall and pick up a target for your next Nerf Party, Family Reunion, Halloween party, Birthday Party, Christmas Party. We even have a Santa target and Pumpkin Target!
Her name is derived from the Latin lux, meaning "light," so she has become associated with festivals and celebrations of light. Before the Gregorian calendar reform in 1752, her feast day occurred on the shortest day of the year (hence the saying "Lucy light, Lucy light, shortest day and longest night"). St. Lucia Day is especially important in Italy and in Sweden, where the oldest (or sometimes youngest) daughter dons a crown of burning candles and wakes the family with coffee and St. Lucia buns (sweet rolls seasoned with saffron).
Saint of the Day!
St. John of the Cross
Patron: Contemplative life; contemplatives; mystical theology; mystics; Spanish poets
Juan de Yepes was the Castilian son of a poor silk weaver of Fontiberos, Toledo, Spain and was born in 1542. His father was of noble birth; he had married much beneath him, and for that offense had been entirely cut off by his family. He had taken to silk weaving as a means of livelihood, but had never been able to make much of it. Soon after the birth of Juan he died, worn out with the effort to keep his wife and three children. The family was left in direst poverty; the children grew up always underfed, so that to the end of his life Juan remained dwarfed in stature.

Unable to learn a trade, he became the servant of the poor in the hospital of Medina, while still pursuing his sacred studies. In 1563, being then twenty-one, he humbly offered himself as a lay-brother to the Carmelite friars, who, however, knowing his talents, had him ordained priest. He would now have exchanged to the severe Carthusian Order, had not St. Teresa of Avila, with the instinct of a saint, persuaded him to remain and help her in the reform of his own Order.

Thus he became the first prior of the Discalced (meaning "barefoot") Carmelites. His reform, though approved by the general, was rejected by the elder friars, who condemned the saint as a fugitive and apostate, and cast him into prison, whence he only escaped, after nine months' suffering, at the risk of his life. Twice again, before his death, he was shamefully persecuted by his brethren, and publicly disgraced. But his complete abandonment by creatures only deepened his interior peace and devout longing for heaven.

St. John was a great contemplative and spiritual writer. He was proclaimed Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI on August 24, 1926. He is the patron of contemplative life, mystical theology, mystics, and Spanish poets.

Dec 6

St. Nicholas of Myra
Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra, is undoubtedly one of the most popular saints honored in the Western world. In the United States, his memory has survived in the unique personality of Saint Claus — the jolly, rotund, white-bearded gentleman who captivates children with promises of gifts on Christmas Eve. Considered primarily as the patron saint of children, Nicholas is also invoked by sailors, merchants, bakers, travelers and pawnbrokers, and with Saint Andrew is honored as the co-patron of Russia.

In spite of his widespread fame, Saint Nicholas, from the historian's point of view, is hardly more than a name. He was born in the last years of the third century in Asia Minor. His uncle, the archbishop of Myra in Lycia, ordained him and appointed him abbot of a nearby monastery. At the death of the archbishop, Nicholas was chosen to fill the vacancy, and he served in this position until his death. About the time of the persecutions of Diocletian, he was imprisoned for preaching Christianity but was released during the reign of Emperor Constantine.

Popular legends have involved Saint Nicholas in a number of charming stories, one of which relates Nicholas' charity toward the poor. A man of Patara had lost his fortune, and finding himself unable to support his three maiden daughters, was planning to turn them into the streets as prostitutes. Nicholas heard of the man's intentions and secretly threw three bags of gold through a window into the home, thus providing dowries for the daughters. The three bags of gold mentioned in this story are said to be the origin of the three gold balls that form the emblem of pawnbrokers.

After Nicholas' death on December 6 in or around 345, his body was buried in the cathedral at Myra. It remained there until 1087, when seamen of Bari, an Italian coastal town, seized the relics of the saint and transferred them to their own city. Veneration for Nicholas had already spread throughout Europe as well as Asia, but this occurrence led to a renewal of devotion in the West. Countless miracles were attributed to the saint's intercession. His relics are still preserved in the church of San Nicola in Bari; an oily substance, known as Manna di S. Nicola, which is highly valued for its medicinal powers, is said to flow from them.

The story of Saint Nicholas came to America in distorted fashion. The Dutch Protestants carried a popularized version of the saint's life to New Amsterdam, portraying Nicholas as nothing more than a Nordic magician and wonder-worker. Our present-day conception of Santa Claus has grown from this version. Catholics should think of Nicholas as a saint, a confessor of the faith and the bishop of Myra — not merely as a jolly man from the North Pole who brings happiness to small children. Many countries and locations honor St. Nicholas as patron: Greece, Russia, the Kingdom of Naples, Sicily, Lorraine, and many cities in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Belgium.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">On Palm Sunday, we receive blessed palms in memory of the glorious procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. We read in John 12:12-13 how people "took branches of trees and went out to meet him, crying, 'Hosanna'..." Traditionally these palms are fashioned into small crosses and displayed in the home.
Giving the gift of prayer to a child for First Communion has always been a tradition.
More traditional gifts of gospels, traditional rosary, necklaces are wonderful.
But do they really teach a child to pray?

A Lego rosary might inspire a child to try really praying.
Each bead offers the prayers has the regular rosary but the beads click together after each prayer. The child has the satisfaction of finishing the prayer and being proud of the accomplishment!
A regular rosary doesn't offer this.
Plus you don't have to worry were you left off! The block is clicked to the point you stopped at.

Did they play Poker with them? Crazy Saints? Old Saint? Go Saint?
I used to imagine has a child these scenario's in heaven.
Did God have this big pile of holy cards he would play with Mary and Jesus? I would giggle in childlike wonder. Now in my OLDER years I realize they are devotions, keepsakes to remind us of their love and sacrifice to God.
However something took place in our society to publish a certain holy card. Of course the obvious is the Canonization or Beatification of a new Saint. But doesn't this represent a time in our development has a Catholic and a historical marker in our history has a society? So holy cards are very important in this fact. In conclusion, sell me Grannys holy cards.
Here are a few I have collected and sold over the last few years.
I remember my own children's baptism. And all the others I have been invited to celebrate in. I have always been in love with children's prayers and blessings for a young one's spiritual growth and protection.

Childhood is one of the most precious gifts God gives to a child. I created my stained glass holy card with this in mind. I wanted an unusual gift for the newly baptised that gave blessings and commemorated the day. You can find this gift at The Recycled Catholic I do take special orders.

Collecting Catholic
I share with my small collection of Mid-Century Mexican Catholic monks.
I just had to have these when I was at the auction. Thinking they might be rare and worth millions! (I jest, with the millions remark)
I later found out they are not so rare. And worth about what I paid for them. But I still shine them up and enjoy them. Value $10-$20

Legend says that a pious woman commonly referred to as 'Veronica'--though she was one of many who accompanied Jesus Christ to he crucifixion on Calvary--was so moved by His suffering she used her veil to wipe His face and the imprint of his features remained on the Veronica Veil.

Legend of Veronica states she took the veil from the Holy Land and used it to cure the Emperor Tiberius of some illness. St. Veronica is said to have left her veil with Pope Saint Clement. Recordings claim Saint Veronica's Veil has been in Rome since the command of Pope Boniface VIII in 1297.

Stories of St. Veronica report her to have been cured by Jesus before his crucifixion. Her faith and her act of charity were the reason He gave her the gift of his face upon her veil.

Some French folklore relates Patron Saint Veronica as the wife of Zacchaeus, the tax collector (Luke 19:1-10). She accompanied him to France, where he was called Amadour. When Amadour became a hermit, St. Veronica moved to evangelize southern France. Others say she is Martha, the sister of Lazarus, or a princess of Edessa, or the wife of an unnamed Gallo-Roman officer. Whatever Veronica's story she is honored as a patron saint of the Catholic Church.

As a child he was known for his piety and love of study, which led him to the priesthood. He became a traveling bishop on the island, and in 686 left Ireland with eleven companions to travel throughout Gaul (present day France and parts of Germany) to preach the Gospel. From there he traveled to Rome to get official sanction from the Pope to become a missionary. St. Kilian returned north and settled in Würzburg as his base of activity along with two of his original companions. He began his work evangelizing the pagans in large parts of Franconia and Thuringia (north and central Germany), earning the name 'Apostle of Franconia.' Saint Kilian converted the Duke of Würzburg and convinced him to end his unlawful marriage. This greatly angered the Duke's wife, who resisted St. Kilian's attempts to convert her. While the Duke was away she had St. Kilian and his two missionary companions beheaded while they were preaching. A cathedral was built on the spot of martyrdom by the first bishop of Würzburg. On St. Kilian's feast day, his relics, along with those of his two companions, are paraded through the streets and put on display in the Würzburg Cathedral that is dedicated to him.
Photo: View from Old Main Bridge in Würzburg towards Festung Marienberg.
