Mother Teresa will Become 'St. Teresa of Calcutta' on September 4

On September 4, the Vatican will hold a ceremony, officiated by Pope Francis, to canonize Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun and missionary of Albanian descent whose work to help the poor of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, and ease their suffering earned her numerous honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize.

To many, Mother Teresa was a humble person with an unlimited capacity to offer unconditional love to people.

“There are two kinds of poverty. There is the poverty of material, for example, in some places like India, Ethiopia or some other places, where people are hungry for bread, real hunger. But there is much deeper hunger and that is hunger for love,” she once said.

Giving comfort to the suffering, offering shelter to the homeless, and helping the poorest of the poor was Mother Teresa's life work.

Mother Teresa was born Anjeza Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, the third child of Albanian parents, in Skopje, Macedonia. She was raised in a middle class family, and at 18 decided to become a nun.

St. Veronica
She is the patron saint of Photographers and Laundry workers is symbolized by holding a veil bearing the face of Christ and carrying the crown of thorns.

Legend says that a pious woman commonly referred to as 'Veronica'--though she was one of many who accompanied Jesus Christ to he crucifixion on Calvary--was so moved by His suffering she used her veil to wipe His face and the imprint of his features remained on the Veronica Veil.

Legend of Veronica states she took the veil from the Holy Land and used it to cure the Emperor Tiberius of some illness. St. Veronica is said to have left her veil with Pope Saint Clement. Recordings claim Saint Veronica's Veil has been in Rome since the command of Pope Boniface VIII in 1297.

Stories of St. Veronica report her to have been cured by Jesus before his crucifixion. Her faith and her act of charity were the reason He gave her the gift of his face upon her veil.

Some French folklore relates Patron Saint Veronica as the wife of Zacchaeus, the tax collector (Luke 19:1-10). She accompanied him to France, where he was called Amadour. When Amadour became a hermit, St. Veronica moved to evangelize southern France. Others say she is Martha, the sister of Lazarus, or a princess of Edessa, or the wife of an unnamed Gallo-Roman officer. Whatever Veronica's story she is honored as a patron saint of the Catholic Church.

In Spanish-style bullfighting, a Verónica is the act of a matador letting his cloak trail over the bull's head as it runs past him.
The same way as St.Veronica is usually depicted holding the cloth.

 St. Gabriel, St. Michael, and St. Raphael share the feast day on September 29, in celebratation of the Archangels. 
Saint Gabriel the Archangel is the messenger angel of God and is mentioned throughout the Bible. He is most famous for appearing to Mary at the Annunciation.
Saint Michael the Archangel is the leader of God's heavenly army. He is most famous for throwing Satan out of heaven as mentioned in the Bible. Saint Michael is considered to be the guardian and protector of the Church.
Saint Raphael is known as a healing angel, mentioned in the Bible for curing a man's blindness and traveling with Tobiah in the book of Tobit.

St. Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions
(1600?-1637)

Lawrence (Lorenzo) was born in Manila of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, both Christians. Thus he learned Chinese and Tagalog from them and Spanish from the Dom...inicans whom he served as altar boy and sacristan. He became a professional calligrapher, transcribing documents in beautiful penmanship. He was a full member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary under Dominican auspices. He married and had two sons and a daughter.
His life took an abrupt turn when he was accused of murder. Nothing further is known except the statement of two Dominicans that "he was sought by the authorities on account of a homicide to which he was present or which was attributed to him."

At that time three Dominican priests, Antonio Gonzalez, Guillermo Courtet and Miguel de Aozaraza, were about to sail to Japan in spite of a violent persecution there. With them was a Japanese priest, Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Lazaro, a leper. Lorenzo, having taken asylum with them, was allowed to accompany them. But only when they were at sea did he learn that they were going to Japan.

They landed at Okinawa. Lorenzo could have gone on to Formosa, but, he reported, "I decided to stay with the Fathers, because the Spaniards would hang me there." In Japan they were soon found out, arrested and taken to Nagasaki. The site of wholesale bloodshed when the atomic bomb was dropped had known tragedy before. The 50,000 Catholics who once lived there were dispersed or killed by persecution.

They were subjected to an unspeakable kind of torture: After huge quantities of water were forced down their throats, they were made to lie down. Long boards were placed on their stomachs and guards then stepped on the ends of the boards, forcing the water to spurt violently from mouth, nose and ears.

The superior, Antonio, died after some days. Both the Japanese priest and Lazaro broke under torture, which included the insertion of bamboo needles under their fingernails. But both were brought back to courage by their companions.

In Lorenzo's moment of crisis, he asked the interpreter, "I would like to know if, by apostatizing, they will spare my life." The interpreter was noncommittal, but Lorenzo, in the ensuing hours, felt his faith grow strong. He became bold, even audacious, with his interrogators.

The five were put to death by being hanged upside down in pits. Boards fitted with semicircular holes were fitted around their waists and stones put on top to increase the pressure. They were tightly bound, to slow circulation and prevent a speedy death. They were allowed to hang for three days. By that time Lorenzo and Lazaro were dead. The three Dominican priests, still alive, were beheaded.

In 1987, Blessed John Paul II canonized these six and 10 others, Asians and Europeans, men and women, who spread the faith in the Philippines, Formosa and Japan. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first canonized Filipino martyr.

Comment:

We ordinary Christians of today—how would we stand up in the circumstances these martyrs faced? We sympathize with the two who temporarily denied the faith. We understand Lorenzo's terrible moment of temptation. But we see also the courage—unexplainable in human terms—which surged from their store of faith. Martyrdom, like ordinary life, is a miracle of grace.

I just completed this wonderful Joan of Arc holy card. Anything vintage and antique with Joan of Arc is highly prized and difficult to find.

Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc,^[2] IPA: [ʒan daʁk]; ca. 1412^[3] – 30 May 1431), nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" (French: La Pucelle d'Orléans), is a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. She was born a peasant girl in what is now eastern France. Claiming divine guidance, she led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII of France. She was captured by the Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy",^[4] and was burned at the stake for heresy when she was 19 years old.^[5]

Twenty-five years after her execution, an inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr.^[5] Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 andcanonized in 1920. She is – along with St. Denis, St. Martin of Tours, St. Louis IX, and St. Theresa of Lisieux – one of the patron saints of France. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent her to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence when she overcame the dismissive attitude of veteran commanders and lifted the siege in only nine days. Several additional swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims.

To the present day, Joan of Arc has remained a significant figure in Western civilization. From Napoleon I onward, French politicians of all leanings have invoked her memory.
